Event Course nutrition

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Having an understanding of what is available on the race course is not only useful should you require the products but provide you with alternative options should you need it for your PLAN B. Taking the time now to look at this can provide you a chance to look at ingredients, and nutritional contents or event purchase and try this to see if this could provide a solution to your needs on race day.

WHERE DO I FIND THIS INFORMATION?

Usually events provide athletes with an event guide. Within this document there is a huge amount of resources that should include

1.     Aid Station Locations

2.     Aid Station Products

3.     Aid Station Layout

Go to the event page and find this information. Only some of these sections may be relevant below if you are doing a single discipline event.

Swim

This is mainly relevant for long distance swimmers or marathon swimmers and the products that you place at feeding stations is usually provided by the individual swimmer.

Consideration here may be the timing or location of the aid station and clear guidelines to supporters as to the products you want at specific timings!

NB. Triathlon events don’t generally offer swimming aid stations

Transition

In triathlons the transition area may also act as an aid station and there is nutrition available. Many triathletes won’t use this but some swimmers that are taking over 90 min may consider this an opportunity to fuel quickly before leaving on their bike.

The main consideration here is whether you will use this aid station or not!

Bike

When you are looking at the event documents note down

  • Where are the aid stations for the bike (km marks)?

  • What fuels are available?

  • What is the order of the fuels?

Start to consider which of these aid stations you will use and what you will pick up at the aid station.
